Effects of selected immunomodulators connected with antioxidants on cellular immune response of high yielding cows in periparturient period

The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of immunomodulators (Propionobacterium granulosum + LPS vs lysozyme dimer) administered together with chosen antioxidants (vitamin C, β-carotene) on cellular immune response of high yielding cows in periparturient period. The study was conducted in a commercial dairy farm. Two weeks before the expected parturition and on the day of calving, 20 cows received vitamin C and β-carotene. Additionally, half of the animals was injected intramuscularly with Propionibacterium granulosum + LPS, and another half with lysosyme dimer. The control group (10 cows) did not receive the above preparations. The subpopulations of T lymphocyte (CD2+, CD4+, CD8+) were determined in whole blood using flow cytometry. The reactive oxygen species production was assessed by chemiluminescence in whole blood, and the phagocytosis was determined by the Phagotest kit. An increase in free oxygenic radicals generated by PMN (measured as a level of spontaneous and induced chemiluminescence) and the phenotype of T lymphocytes of cows from experimental groups were demonstrated. Additionally, the percentage of phagocytosing cells and individual phagocytic activity were also higher in experimental cows. The results of the presented investigation showed an increase in cell-mediated immunity in cows receiving immunomodulators administered together with the chosen antioxidants.
