Weed science is a relatively new discipline of knowledge because the scientific research started just at XIX century. In the middle of XX century the following areas of research were developed: weed biology, new formulations of herbicides, systems of spraying, environmental aspects of herbicide usage. In that period the development of weed science was closely connected with the research into herbicides. A weak point of weed science seems to be still limited knowledge of weed biology and ecology which makes difficult the introduction of weed management systems based on scientific arguments. Most important issues which should be developed in the future are: weed biology and ecology, integrated weed management, allelopathy, biological methods of weed control, methods of crop volunteers control and also developing of weed management systems in transgenic crops resistant to herbicides including environmental aspects. The most important task of weed science is to recognize weed biology, ecology, physiology and genetic for development of effective weed control systems which ensure the safety of food and environment. The close cooperation between weed science and other scientific disciplines is necessary for realization of these goals.
