Wyspa Wielkanocna jest jednym z najbardziej odizolowanych lądów na świecie. Pierwotnie porośnięta bujnymi lasami tropikalnymi, po zasiedleniu przez ludzi szybko przeobraziła się w bezleśne pustkowie. Wymarły endemiczne palmy Paschalococos disperta, w głównej mierze tworzące drzewostan, a także wiele gatunków również endemicznych ptaków. Po wylesieniu załamał się także system społeczny mieszkańców, prowadząc do walk i dramatycznego spadku ludności. Niniejsza praca przedstawia współczesne poglądy na temat przyczyn wylesienia wyspy oraz opisuje jej dawną przyrodę, skupiając się na Paschalococos disperta, mającej duże znaczenie dla ekosystemu i dla mieszkańców.

Easter Island is one of the most isolated lands in the world. Originally covered with tropical forests, after settling by people it quickly transformed into a forestless wasteland. Endemic Paschalococos disperta palms, mainly forming tree stand have disappeared, as well as many species of endemic birds. After deforestation, the social system of the inhabitants also broke down, leading to fights and dramatic population decline. This paper presents contemporary views on the causes of deforestation of the island and describes its former nature, focusing on the Paschalococos disperta, which was of great importance to both the ecosystem and the inhabitants.
