The aim of the article is to present local differentiation of rural areas in terms of the development of business units of physical persons registered in the REGON system in Poland in the year 2003. In the light of the analysis it can be stated that businesses of physical persons constitute an important part in the economic structure of the rural areas in Poland. In the year 2003 over 740 thousand business units were registered. They of-ten are the only non-agricultural jobs available. The most attractive, in this respect are rural areas situated in the neighborhood of the big urban and industrial agglomerations. High activity in establishing business can be observed in the areas characterized by high tourist attractiveness. The lowest activity can be noticed in the rural areas situated on the eastern border of Poland. New factors appear that are conducive to location of new small businesses such as: tax and investment allowances on the areas threatened with structural unemployment and in the special economic zones. Furthermore, the possibilities to use from the European Union seem to be encouraging. Also, the activities of the subsidies government are of significant influence.
