The leading cause of death in elderly are cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Dietary recommendations for older people to prevent CVD are not different from those for a younger population. However the scientific evidence that dietary intervention introduced late in life reduce cardiovascular events is limited because of deficiency of controlled feeding trials. In this situation the recommendations for elderly people are based on the opinion consensus, which results from beneficial effects of a Mediterranean diet and similar to it a DASH diet on the risk factors profile. What concerns Polish senior population the prevalence of CV risk factors is very high (WOBASZ Senior study), Thus dietary intervention should include replacement of saturated fat by unsaturated fat, avoidance of processed food containing trans fatty acids, increase fruit and vegetable intake, at least to 400 g daily, intake of fish twice weekly (one portion oily fish) and restriction of salt intake < 5 g daily.
