Artykuł zarysowuje genezę powołania i historię 35 lat działalności lubelskiego Zakładu Zagospodarowania Przestrzennego i Urbanistyki Instytutu Gospodarki Przestrzennej i Mieszkalnictwa w Warszawie. Rozważa szanse jego przyszłości i wyciąga kilka wniosków - refleksji ogólnych, dotyczących potrzeby reform polskiego systemu gospodarki przestrzennej, w tym rozwoju badań i instytucji badawczo-rozwojowych, także regionalnych.

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Lublin Division of the Institute of Spatial Economy and Housing in Warsaw, the authors of the article present its roots and history. Also, they express the expectations associated with its existence and research successes, nonetheless without overlooking the degradation of its functions in recent years, marked by a spatial planning crisis in Poland. An important part of the article is dedicated to considerations about the purpose of existence of a central research institute, that deals with the problems of national spatial economy on a continuous basis in the present economic system of Poland; as well as the purpose of maintaining or establishing its regional branches, in problem areas in particular, such as the Lublin region and all Eastern Poland. The authors indicate that the problems of spatial culture and economy, spatial management or sustainable development, have been underestimated in Poland in recent times. The situation requires prompt and dramatic reaction, mainly intensified analyses of aggravating issues, and structural remedies to the national spatial economy system.
