Introduction of new technical equipment and modern technologies in the field of dairy production on the farms, besides many predicted advantages, may be a source of problems related to the system: human-machine-animal. On the basis of literature review and results of own observations, detailed studies were conducted concerning the consequences and barriers of using milking robots on dairy farms, against the background of benefits from introduction of automatic milking systems (AMS). Following aspects were considered: technical, technological, economic, social and ethical ones. Some statistical data were analysed to point out the differences in economic conditions and effectiveness of AMS introduction in selected European countries.
