Blood lead level (Pb), blood zinc protoporphyrin level (ZPP), urinary delta-aminolevulinic acid level (ALA), blood hemoglobin level (Hb) and activity of glutathione S-transferase (GST) were determined in erythrocytes of a zinc and lead foundry workers occupationally exposed to lead (group Pb > 250 µg/dm3, n = 160, mean = 404.1 µg/dm3), and of controls (Pb < 250 µg/dm3, n = 59, mean = 165.2 µg/dm3). The Pb-exposed group was further divided into 3 subgroups: low-Pb (Pb = 250-350 µg/dm3), medium-Pb (Pb = 350-450 µg/dm3), and high-Pb (Pb over 450 µg/dm3). Correlations between Pb, ZPP ALA and GST were not detected. GST was significantly (about 25%) higher in the erythrocytes of the Pb 250 to 450 µg/dm3 workers than in the control. The GST induction seems to represent the adaptative response mechanism connected with lead ion detoxication.
