In 37 women aged 18-45 years living in the City of Łódź the prevalence of iron deficiency was assessed on the basis of values of SF, TS, SI, TIBC, MCV, MCH, MCHC, Hb and Hct. Iron deficiency and sideropenic anaemia were found in all in 40% of these women. The most useful indicator of deficiency was serum ferritin level, however, in the correct assessment of various iron saturation states all available indicators of iron level should be considered.
