The basic parameters of silage with respect to the bale density, methods and the time protection from the air inlet were discussed. It has been proved that a better silage quality can be obtained from chopped or intensively mechanically treated green fodder than from the material with long stems. In order to provide the favourable conditions for fermentation processes in ensiled forage it is necessary to cover the bale with no fewer than four layers of stretch film. The silage from the bale put into single bags are usually of worse quality than the silage from the bales wrapped with stretch film.
