Badania sugerują, że palenie tytoniu może odgrywać rolę w rozwoju stwardnienia rozsianego. Zwiększone ryzyko rozwoju choroby wśród palaczy tytoniu wykazano w wielu badaniach epidemiologicznych, chociaż prowadzonych na malej populacji, nie zawsze jednoznacznych. Związku pomiędzy paleniem tytoniu a postępem stwardnienia rozsianego dotychczas nie badano. Celem naszej pracy jest dokonanie przeglądu wyników badań epidemiologicznych wskazujących na związek między paleniem tytoniu a zwiększonym ryzykiem rozwoju i postępem przebiegu stwardnienia rozsianego w oparciu o dostępne dane literaturowe.

Experimental data suggest that cigarette smoking may play a role in the development of multiple sclerosis. The increased risk of multiple sclerosis among smokers has been found in several epidemiological studies, although they have been small and inconclusive. The association between smoking and progression of MS has not been examined yet. The aim of our study was to review the epidemiologic evidence associating smoking and increased risk and progression of multiple sclerosis on the base of recent literature data.
