W teorii ekologii istnieje kilka bardzo ważnych modeli opisujących zasady osiedlania się organizmów. Poniżej przedstawiono najważniejsze z nich wskazując na występujący we wszystkich wspólny element: lepsze siedliska są zawsze zajmowane przez osobniki wcześniej niż siedliska gorsze. Wskazuje to na prosty mechanizm oceny jakości siedlisk – powinny one być oceniane na podstawie kolejności zasiedlania

The article presents the theoretical background for the model of ideal pre-emptive distribution: the difference between contest and scramble competition, the buffer population regulation model, the principles of Ideal Free and Ideal Dominance Distribution, finally presenting the model of settlement based on individual sites, analyzed in the spatial scale of individuals. The article presents the simple but very important theoretical implication of these models: in each of them the better habitats or individual sites are occupied earlier. Thus, the time of settlement of individuals of given species should be used in practice in environmental impact assessments, to judge the quality of given species habitat
