Dotychczasowe koncepcje rozwoju społecznego zajmowały się głównie dynamiką przemian społeczno - kulturowych. Nie uwzględniały relacji społeczeństwo - środowisko. Powstanie koncepcji „zrównoważonego i trwałego rozwoju” (sustainable development) jest okazją dla zajęcia się tymi właśnie problemami przez socjologów. Koncepcja ta jest zasadniczo odmienną strategią rozwoju społecznego w porównaniu z dotychczasowymi koncepcjami modernizowania społeczeństwa, postuluje zasadniczą zmianę dotychczasowego modelu cywilizacji. Autor zwraca uwagę na najważniejsze problemy zrównoważonego rozwoju.

Principally, to-date concepts of social development have dealt with the dynamics of social and cultural changes. They have not considered society/environment relationship. Creating the concept of sustainable development provides sociologists with the opportunity to take up these issues. Basically, the concept is an alternative of the strategy for social development, and when considered against the concepts of modernising the society which have been developed so far, it offers a dramatic change in the civilisational model. The author focuses on the most important issues of sustainable development.
