The paper discusses the relationship between structural change in agriculture and subsistence production in South-eastern Poland. The analyses show that subsistence is likely to diminish if structural transformation of the farm sector progresses. Currently, this process is however hampered by the absence of efficient factor markets. The rural labour market and low level of education do not allow the outflow of the farm labour force, which in turn also blocks the improvement of work efficiency. On the other hand some of the subsistence farms can be very resistant to any economic changes as they have hardly any contact with agricultural market and fulfil many social needs.

Praca porusza zagadnienia związane ze specyficznymi warunkami istniejącymi w rolnictwie i na obszarach wiejskich Polski południowo-wschodniej (na tle danych statystycznych dwóch ostatnich powszechnych spisów rolnych), które skutkują istnieniem wysokiego udziału gospo­darstw produkujących tylko lub głównie na potrzeby własne, jeśli w ogóle nie zaprzestały prowadzenia produkcji rolniczej. Przystąpienie Polski do Unii Europejskiej i Wspólnej Polityki Rolnej otwiera nowe możliwości finansowania w rolnictwie, w tym w rolnictwie ekstensywnym i zachowawczym, charakteryzują­cym gospodarstwa produkujące na potrzeby własne.
