The aim of the study was to find a correlation, if any, between the mode of nutrition, the nutritional status and the physical fitness of children aged 13-15 years in an elementary school in Biała Podlaska. The nutrition mode was assessed by means of consumption history covering the last 24 hours before interviewing. In the interviews the history of food .consumption was obtained from weekdays and days free of school. The,nutritional status was assessed on the basis of the measurements of body height and mass, relative body mass, and thickness of skin-fat folds. The reaction of the organism to exercise was studied by means of the PWC170 test, and fitness by maximal oxygen uptake (V02max) by indirect method. It was demonstrated that the mean daily energy consumption was 10.4±2.0 MJ (2483±473 kcal) in boys, and 7.9±1.8 MJ (1898±4438 kcal) and it was below the recommended normal consumption by 17% and 27% respectively. The greatest deficiencies were found in the intake of magnesium, calcium and vitamin B2 (about 57%, 50% and 40% below the recommended norm, respectively). The nutritional status of the children (with the exception of body mass) was not grossly different from that of children in Warsaw schools. The physical fitness of these children was about 20% below that in their peers in Warsaw. No evident correlation was revealed between the mode of nutrition, the nutritional status and the fitness.
