The term „light” is usually applied to food products with lowered content of the energy as compared to their traditional equivalents. These products meet the expectations of the specific category of consumers whom for various reasons, e.g. to be slim are interested in such food products. One can assume that young consumers belong to this category of consumers since they tend to purchase „light” products more often than rather group of consumers. To verify such supposition one conducted in the year 2004 a survey with 300 young consumers from among whom 2/3 were students of different Polish universities, and 1/3 pupils from provincial secondary schools. The research results show that: - a source of the information about „light” products is first of all the information on the packaging, the publicity and the press; - according to the respondents the consumers who buy „light” products are young women, unmarried, living in the cities, having higher or average education who do not fear to test innovative products, instead men in the not large degree take interest in this type of products; - the young consumer admitted to know „light” products such as, yoghurts, coca-cola, milk, the crisp bread-stuffs , cheeses, sweeteners, jams, wafers, juices, ice creams, meat products with lowered content of the fat; instead most often bought product were the chewing-gum, and a little more seldom drinks of the type „light”; the least frequently bought products were powders to prepare cakes at home, chocolates, the whipped cream in the powder, ice-cream, wafers, sweeteners, sweets, meat products with lowered content of the fat, margarines of low calorie content, the milk 0% fat, mayonnaises „light”; - most important motives to purchase „light” products were lowered caloricity, lowered content of the fat and the fact that these type of products support being slim.
