In order to understand changes in Dutch breeding bird numbers a Nest Record Scheme was launched in 1994. In the first five years more than 35 000 nest record cards of approximately 150 species were received, and the annual number of cards sent in stabilised around 10 000 from 1996 onwards. Representative five-year estimations of nesting success, based on the daily survival rate according to the Mayfield-method, are possible for 50 species. Annual surveillance of nesting success is in reach for 32 species. Hence, the Nest Record Scheme provides for tens of Dutch breeding birds unique reproductive information. Additionally, since the daily survival rate appears to follow a probability-density function, solving of this function enables precise calculation of the confidence intervals of daily survival rates.

Holenderska organizacja pozarządowa SOVON wspomagana przez ornitologów-amatorów opisuje rozmieszczenie, liczebność i rozwój populacji ptaków lęgowych i nielęgowych Holandii. W celu zrozumienia obserwowanych zmian liczebności ptaków lęgowych został uruchomiony Program Kart Gniazdowych. Zbierane informacje obejmują 5 kategorii danych: 1) gatunek, położenie geograficzne, obserwator; 2) kontrole gniazdowe — data, liczba jaj i/lub piskląt, zaawansowanie lęgu itd.; 3) wynik lęgu (lęg zakończony/nie zakończony sukcesem, ew. brak danych); 4) środowisko, położenie i opis gniazda; 5) ewentualne informacje o obrączkowaniu ptaków i biometrii. Przy komputerowej obróbce danych możliwe jest szacowanie lub prognozowanie trendów wielu zmiennych związanych z rozrodem (od wielkości zniesienia do sukcesu lęgowego) dla wielu gatunków ptaków. W ciągu pierwszych pięciu lat funkcjonowania programu otrzymano ponad 35 000 kart gniazdowych dla ok. 150 gatunków ptaków (rozmieszczenie geograficzne — patrz Fig. 1). Po 1996 r. liczba kart przysyłanych rocznie ustabilizowała się na ok. 10 000. Reprezentatywne oszacowanie sukcesu lęgowego w okresie pięciu lat (na podstawie metody Mayfielda) możliwe było dla 50 gatunków, zaś dla 32 gatunków osiągnięto coroczną informację o sukcesie lęgowym (Fig. 2). Karty gniazdowe pełnią także ważną rolę w badaniach porównawczych wpływu gospodarki rolnej na ptaki terenów otwartych. W 10 na 12 badanych przypadkach (4 gatunki, 3 lata) dzienny wskaźnik przeżywania jest wyższy na terenach, na których zastosowano zabiegi ochronne (Fig. 3). Na tej podstawie można stwierdzić, że ochrona gniazd jest bardzo ważna, choć losy wyklutych piskląt powinny być objęte dalszymi badaniami, a informacje o sukcesie lęgowym mogą być ważnym narzędziem w programach ochrony przyrody. Metoda kart gniazdowych nie jest wolna od potencjalnych przekłamań, koniecznych założeń i uogólnień podczas procesu zbierania i obróbki danych (ich głównym źródłem jest nielosowy wybór gniazd tak w czasie jak i przestrzeni), jednakże pozwala na zebranie unikalnych danych dotyczących rozrodu dla dziesiątków gatunków ptaków. Informacje te będą stanowiły podstawę do zrozumienia zmian liczebności poszczególnych gatunków itd.
