A research project carried out in the years 1993-1996 enabled to obtain a detailed characteristic of mineral and hydrogenic soils of the Masurian Lake District marcoregion and the Sępopol Plain mesoregion, as related to 9 types of young glacial landscape distinguished in this region. A distinct meridional differentiation as well as various properties of soil cover make it necessary to separate three areas in the case of which preserving ecological balance of environmental requires taking some special steps. Agricultural production should be the mainfunction of the northern area, resistant to changes and degradation, with the dominance of heavy soil and a small area of hydrogenic sites. Ecological land use is of primary importance in the central part of the region, which is lake origin, as erosional threats concentrate there. A special role is played in the environment by hydrogenic soils. The rules concerning their use, protection and renaturalization, in connection with the properties of sites, are presented in the paper. Light soils that require improvement and big area of hydrogenic soils, prone to overdrying and transformations, are characteristic of the southern part of the region. Infiltration, topogenous type of site feeding results in the fact that the regulation of water conditions may be conducted only over a vast area. What follows, greenlands, arable lands and forests ought to occupy separate areas, with soil moisture that would satisfy their needs.
