The purpose of the research was to investigate the efficacy of the treatment of acanthosis nigricans in dachshunds with orally administered melatonin. The studies were performed on 32 dogs aged from 14 months to 7 years. The animals were divided into 2 groups: I-21 dogs aged up to 2 years with a juvenile form of the disease, and II - 11 dogs over 2 years old with symptoms of acanthosis nigricans. Melatonin was given orally at a dose of 3 mg per dog daily for 7 days and subsequently twice a week at the same dose for the next 9 weeks. A clinical examination was performed after 5 and 10 weeks of the treatment. The results obtained showed that in the dogs with acanthosis nigricans younger than 2-years of age administration of melatonin was associated with significant clinical improvement. In older dogs this treatment was not effective. No side effects were noted during treatment.
