The antioxidant activity of an extract from elder flower (Sambucus nigra L.) was tested by assessing its ability to neutralize DPPH and hydroxyl (OH•) radicals. The IC50 concentrations for the inhibition of the respective radicals were found to be 0.152 μg/ml and 0.0122 μg/ml. The extract possesses antioxidant activity in a linoleic acid model system, as 0.005% extract concentration resulted in 57.60% inhibition of conjugated dienes formation, while at a concentration of 0.01% the extract inhibited 76.02% of the generation of secondary linoleic acid oxidized products.

Badano działanie przeciwutleniające wyciągu z bzu czarnego (Sambucus nigra L.) sprawdzając, czy może on neutralizować rodniki DPPH i jon wodorotlenowy (OH•). Stężenia IC50 potrzebne do zahamowania działania tych rodników wyniosły 0,152 μg/ml i 0,0122 μg/ml. Wyciąg działa przeciwutleniająco w modelu kwasu linolowego. Zastosowanie wyciągu o stężeniu 0,005% spowodowało zahamowanie tworzenia dienów sprzężonych, natomiast przy stężeniu 0,01% wyciąg hamował tworzenie 76,02% utlenionych pochodnych kwasu linolowego.
