The aim of this paper was to show the effect of consuming alcohol on physiological and sociological functions of athletes. It is well known a short term responses of human organism on alcohol intake, however there is not the method which precisely discribe long term and chronic problem drinking. Alcohol related problems may be more prevalent in athletic population at the age profile of 18–24 year old males. The wide spread alcoholism especially is observed in soccer players. Some of amateur African footballers (16%) drunk immediatelly before sports competition methylated alcohol. It is suggested that sports related injuries are more statistically induced in drinkers compared with nondrinkers athletes. This may be due to the hangover effect of alcohol drinking, which has been shown to reduce athletic performance, respiratory dynamics, cardiac function, a deleterious effect on many psychomotor skills, or may impair temperature regulation during prolonged exercise. Alcohol is a potentially lethal drug and in certain kind of sports is considered as a banned medium. In this condition athletes and coaches need to be aware of the harmless effects of alcohol consumption and its role in sports injury and poor physical performance, so it can not be recommended in serious professional sport.
