Methods of fish cell cultures were based upon those orginally developed for mammalian cells and were modified to fit the needs of cold-blooded verteibrate cells (1, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17). The application of fish cell techniques has brought about the isolation of several fish viruses: IPN - infectious pancreatic necrosis (20), VHS – virus of haemorrhagic septicemia (9), GFA - grunt fin agent (3) and virus of lymphocystosis (20). Recent advances in fish tissue and cell culture have been largely restricted to trout and tench (6, 8, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20), and carp have been given rather limited attention (10, 11, 13). These investigations were principally concerned with cell culture which would be useful in working with those fish diseases for which viral etiology had been either stated or postulated. A special attention will be paid to carp dropsy and swim bladder inflammation, either being the frequent cause of great losses in carp population. More detailed investigations over this major communicable fish diseases in Poland are also necessary because uniform system of health of national and international traffic in live fish is planned.
