Okresowo wysychające zbiorniki wodne są unikalnym miejscem występowania skorupiaków zaliczanych do tzw. dużych skrzelonogów. Zgrupowania takie stają się coraz rzadsze z powodu dużej wrażliwości astatycznych zbiorników wodnych na wiele czynników, głównie pochodzenia antropogenicznego. W wielu krajach niektóre gatunki Branchiopoda są wysoce zagrożone wyginięciem. Stan zachowania oraz rozmieszczenie dużych skrzelonogów w Polsce są bardzo słabo poznane

Large branchiopods (Crustacea: Branchiopoda: Anostraca, Notostraca, Laevicaudata, Spinicaudata, Cycle stherida) inhabit temporary waterbodies. These crustaceans are worldwide distributed, with about 500 known species (12 species were recorded from Poland: Triops cancriformis, Lepidurus apus, Cyzicus tetracerus, Limnadia lenticularis, Lynceus brachyurus, Branchinecta paludosa, Branchipus schaefferi, Eubranchipus grubii, Chirocephalus diaphanus, C. josephinae, C. shadini and Streptocephalus torvicornis). Astatic waterbodies are highly sensitive to many factors, mainly anthropogenic ones. Nowadays these habitats and the species that live in them are highly endangered. The number of threatened large branchiopod species increases and the communities of these crustaceans are very scarce in many other countries. No detailed information is available about the distribution of large branchiopods in Poland, nevertheless seven species of them were recorded during the latest research conducted in the region of Wielkopolska
