Zużycie antybiotyków z grupy tetracyklin w weterynarii jest stosunkowo wysokie. Światowa produkcja szacowana jest w tysiącach ton rocznie, a w Unii Europejskiej powyżej 2300 ton, zaś w Stanach Zjednoczonych powyżej 3200 ton rocznie.

The use of tetracycline antibiotics is relatively high in veterinary medicine. The global production is estimated at thousands of tons annually: over 2.300 tons in the European Union and over 3.200 tons in the USA. When administered to animals, tetracyclines are poorly metabolized and 70-80% of a therapeutic dose is excreted. The aim of this study was to estimate the phytotoxicity of chlor- tetracycline soil pollutants to yellow lupin seedlings. It was shown that the dry weight of seedlings after 3, 6 and 9 days increased. The average content of chlorophyll in leaves of control plants was 44 SPAD units where as after 9 days of exposure to the highest of the applied concentrations it decreased to 13 SPAD. There was an increase in the activity of guaiacol peroxidase together with an incremental concentration of the antibiotic in the soil. On days 3, 6 and 9, the activity of the enzyme increased in comparison to the controls. The highest increase in the enzyme activity was recorded on day 9 after the application of tetracycline. The activity of guaiacol peroxidase in the control was 0.706 U while on day 9 it amounted to 0.985 U at the highest antibiotic content.
