W 1988 roku naukowcy z Massachusetts Institute of Technology i Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution odkryli w Morzu Sargassowym grupę prokariotycznych organizmów, należących do pikofitoplanktonu.

In 1988 scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution discovered in the Sargasso Sea group of prokaryotic organisms, a part of phytoplankton. These are cyanoses (cyanic bacteria), Prochlorococcus marinus. Their diameter is between 0,3 and 0,7 µm: in 1 liter of oceanic water there are ca 1000 million of cyanosis cells. It contributes to the production of 50% of atmospheric oxygen. It has a key value to the carbon circulation, and plays an important role in regulating the climate of our planet.
