Metoda PCR/ESI-MS stanowi połączenie reakcjiPCR genów, m.in. 16S rRNA, i spektroskopii masowej, a technika MALDI-TOF/MS wykorzystuje spektroskopię masową do określania profili białkowych drobnoustrojów. Obie techniki w najbliższym czasie mogą stać się podstawą pracy w laboratorium mikrobiologicznym.

Quickly advancing progress in the field of molecular biology methods contributes to theim provement of the process of microorganisms identification. This new developments are importantin work in the microbial cultures collections, since the possibility of a thorough and rapid detection of microorganisms in them is crucial. Basic molecular method of identification by sequencing 16SrRNA genes has been established by Carl Woese. And in the last few years with the use of discoveries such his, methods, which give hope for accurate and routine identification of microorganisms, have been developing. PCR/ESI-MS is a combination of PCR reactions of for example 16SrRNA genes and mass spectroscopy, and MALDI-TOF/MS uses mass spectroscopy to obtain protein profiles of microorganisms. Both techniques in the near future may rise to basic procedures in the microbiological laboratory.
