In its attempt to understand the mystery of life in the biosphere, ecology investigates numerous relationships between organisms and between them and the environment. But we still know next to nothing about the workings of the Earth's ecosystem. While we have described more or less 1.5 million species, scientists calculate the total number of species at even 100 millions. Especially small is our knowledge on biodiversity of microorganisms. Our knowledge on interactions between species is even less known. Some new theories violate our view of ourselves as discrete physical beings separated from the rest of nature. Human body can be considered as "superorganisms" with an internal ecosystem of diverse symbiotic microbiota and parasites. One of the most compelling aspects of ecology is its discovery, or rather rediscovery, that "everything is connected to everything else".
