"The Czech agriculture minister - as far as my personal observations are concerned - has a rational approach to GMO farming. He generally feels that farmers should have the right to choose the type of crops and style of production that they wish to apply - whether they be conventional, ecological or genetically modified food products," remarks Jana Mikulasova. In her opinion, the Czech agriculture ministry essentially supports the creation of conditions in which farmers would have the largest choice. For this reason, the ministry is attempting to provide the fullest amount of information possible. The effect? Farmers know what genetically-modified crops are and which crops they may grow in the European Union, what the technology means, how they can benefit from its use and what the rules are concerning its application. The ministry also produces publications and brochures in which farmers can find all the important information about genetically modified crops (GM). This approach has made it easier to direct investment to the Czech Republic, in which a rational scientific approach supports the growth of biological sciences, including biotechnological research in the red (medicine), white (industry) and green (agriculture) sectors.
