Uzyskane wyniki mogą potwierdzać hipotezę, w myśl której glin zmienia przepuszczalność błony komórkowej, czego efektem jest zmiana ciśnienia turgorowego i modyfikacja wzrostu.

Despite a large number of recently published papers on aluminum toxicity the mechanism of Al-induced growth inhibition remains poorly understood. Several mechanisms for aluminum exclusion were proposed. The main objective of the study was to determine and to compare the effect of aluminum ions on the root and shoot growth of seedlings of Zea mays L. and on the elongation of coleoptile segments cut from them. The experiments were carried out on maize seedlings and on 10-mm long coleoptile segments cut from four-day-old etiolated maize seedling. Elongation growth were performed using a modification of a shadow method (seedlings measured) and by means of a position of angular transducer (coleoptile segments measured). Aluminum (AlCl3) was used at the concentration of 1 mmol∙dm-3. pH of the incubation medium was 4.2. It was showed that the exposure of Zea mays L. seedlings and coleoptile segments to aluminum brought about a suppression of root growth and coleoptile elongation. It was found that aluminum ions caused the inhibition of root growth and stimulation of shoot growth. Elongation growth of maize coleoptile segments was limited by aluminum in 21% at the most. This data support the hypothesis that aluminum may lead to the alterations in membrane permeability and consequently change the turgor pressure and inhibit growth of plant tissues.
