F. A. Paxs interests in palaeobotany are reflected in his publications dealing with fossil plants, mainly those discovered on the territory of Silesia. He investigated fossil floras of different age, from the Tertiary to early historic times. In his monograph of the genus Acer L. Pax presented critical revision of all fossil species of this genus, previously described from the Tertiary of Europe, and described his idea of Acer phylogenetics. It was Pax who for the first time used A. Englers theory of historical development of vegetation of the northern hemisphere to the interpretation of Tertiary fossils of Europe.
