W odmianach ozimych był on jednak znacznie słabszy w porównaniu do odmian jarych.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a class of enzymes protecting live cells from toxic activity of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which are mainly generated in stressful conditions. The aim of this paper was the determination of a low temperature influence on mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) gene expression in spring and winter barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars by means of the real-time PCR method. The obtained results proved a low temperature influence on MnSOD gene expression profile change in barley. For all examined cultivars MnSOD gene expression decrease was observed after 48 hours of 4°C temperature treatment. However, in winter cultivars the decrease was weaker as compared to the observed in spring cultivars. After 7 days of cold treatment a strong increase of the examined gene expression was described for both of the analyzed winter cultivars and for spring cultivar Barke. The obtained results indicate that changes at the MnSOD gene expression stage are one of the regulatory factor of barley plant response to stress connected with the ROS generation.
