The paper presents the preliminary results of efficiency of pollution removal in the on site sewage treatment plants with activated sludge in the commune of Radzyń Podlaski. Physicochemical analyses of sewage indicated a very low degree of the disposal of phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium compounds, suspended solids and organic pollutants, expressed by the means of BOD5 and COD indicators. This situation results from problems occurring during the operation as a consequence of errors committed during the design stage (the absence of a classic septic tank) and construction of the sewage treatment plant (the shallow construction of the pipes carrying the treated sewage and the drainage system). Investigations indicate the necessity to inspect all the objects in the commune area and introduce the required modifications that will facilitate the process of pollutant disposal. Furthermore, it is crucial to review the principles of designing new sewage treatment plants and introduce strict and expert supervision during their construction, accompanied by an educational campaign aimed at familiarizing the users with the functioning and operation of a mini-sewage treatment plant.
