The paper presents changes in the gross nitrogen balance and the efficiency of nitrogen use in Poland and particular provinces in the year 2002-2008 against the changes in the intensity of agricultural production. The level of nitrogen fertilization as a basic yield producing factor and the livestock density decisive in the natural fertilization level were the main measures of intensity changes in agricultural production. The gross nitrogen balances were prepared on the basis of the method suggested by the OECD as one of the commonly accepted methods of losses and flows of that component in the environment. In the years 2002-2008, an increasing tendency of gross nitrogen balance was observed in Poland, which resulted, to a large extent, from growing intensity of plant production measured with the use of mineral nitrogen fertilizers. In the last four years the surplus of nitrogen balance amount, on the average, to 56 kg N·ha-1 AL with the index of efficiency of nitrogen use at the level of 55%. Lately, the highest balance surplus of that nutrient in Poland (over 75 kg N·ha-1) pointing to a potential environmental hazard was observed in the Kujawy-Pomerania, Wielkopolska and Łódź provinces. On the other hand, the least balance which surplus, not exceeding 30 kg N·ha-1 AL are observed in Małopolska and Podkarpackie provinces. Process of polarization taking place in Polish agriculture including the agrarian structure and the intensity of agricultural production also visible in the extent of regional gross nitrogen balances point to the deepening of the existing differentiation.
