There is a growing demand for environmentally friendly and cost effective remediation of environment contaminated with such toxic substances as: persistent organic pollutants (POP), heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Bio- and phytoremediation serve as a promising tool for decontamination of polluted soils. Plants belonging to cucurbits (Cucurbitaceae) family, demonstrate exceptional ability to take up and ac- cumulate pollutants in the aerial parts of plants. Hence, recent literature provides more detailed information on the possible use of cucurbits in remediation technologies.
