The objective of this study was to determine the number of microorganisms with pectinolytic properties in soil under potato cultivation in different cropping system, organic and conventional. Soil samples for microbiological analyses were collected three or four times during three years. The number of pectinolytic microorganisms was determined based on the secreted enzymes of the group: polygalacturonases and pectin lyases in solid culture medium using the soil solution method. The results indicate a considerable differentiation of the count level of pectinolytic microorganisms in the compared cropping systems. It appears that more microorganisms capable of pectin decomposition by pectin lyases were associated with organic farming as compared with conventional system. In contrast, a slightly higher number of microorganisms hydrolyzed pectins by means of enzymes from the group of polygalacturonases were determined in the soil cultivated conventionally. The time of sampling had a signifi cant effect on microbial development. Defi nitely lower number of pectinolytic microorganisms was determined at the beginning of the plant growth (I–II date of analyses). However, their quantitative composition increased along with the growth period, reaching the highest level at tuber harvest maturity.
