The buffer properties was determined in soils of selected forest ecosystems of the Bydgoszcz, Toruń and Stupsk province. As most organic sub-horizons and mineral horizons show low base saturation and high acidity was stated in studied soils. Their ability to neutralize bases was much higher then that to neutralize acids. The highest effectivity of buffering protons was observed in organic sub-horizons. The buffering capacities was correlated with hydrolytic acidity, sum of exchangeable bases, organic matter, silt and clay fraction content and cation exchange capacity.
