Better results in rearing piglets could be obtained mainly through the improved systems of sows keeping. The objective of this research was to answer the question, how the type of farrowing pen could influence rearing performance and microclimat in the farrowing house? Friedland type pens were installed instead of orginal Gi-Gi type pens in the same type of farrowing house. Investigations were carried out in 1985 on 71 litters from Polish Large White x Polish Landrace sows, kept in two different types of pens /Gi-Gi and Friedland/ from farrowing to the 28 day of lactation. There were 34 litters /11 from primiparous and 23 from multiparous sows /evaluated in Gi-Gi pens and 37 litters/ 10 from primiparous and 27 from multiparous sows/ evaluated in Friedland type pens. It was concluded that the change from Gi-Gi pens to Friedland pens improved microclimat of farrowing house and improved rearing performance: losses of piglets decreased 7%, litter weight at 21 day increased 6 kg and mean piglet body weight at 28 day increased by 1 kg. The stated differences were statistically significant.
