Nystersol was examined for its efficiency in the treatment of inflammatory conditions of the vagina induced by T. vaginalis. The examinations were made with 3 strains in vitro and the treatment with the drug was instituted in 38 patients (including 8 girls) in whom clinical and laboratory examinations showed trichomonal vaginitis. The in vitro examinations reveated that Nystersol when given in high concentr ations (12.5, 5.0%) exerts a destroying action on T. vaginalis as early as after 1 hour. With these concentrations, no motile protozoa were found after 8-9 and more hours. In 38 patients treated with this drug, a tendency to disappear or total regressian of clinical symptoms could be observed already during the treatment. Nystersol was found to have a deleterious effect on the vaginal bacterial flora which promotes the T. vaginalis infection. The follow-up examinations performed 38 and 72 days after the completion of the1 therapy showed the presence of the parasite in the vaginal discharge of 14 patients, but the vaginal cleanliness as evaluated according to Jirovec, Peter and Malek was shifted towards more positive groups and subgroups. In the authors' opinion the therapeutic failure in these patients is accounted for by repeated superinfection from various sources (sexual partners, family, penetration of the parasite from the urinary tract) which could not be brought under control. No side effects of the drug were seen. The authors advocate clinical studies on the combined treatment of trichomonadosis with Nystersol and a drug with generał action.
