The objectives which are important from the point of view of environmental protection can be implemented in diff erent ways, using various management tools. Therefore, it should be noted that it seems to be fully reasonable to assume that some of the important aims in terms of environmental protection will be achieved through spatial management tools. The main objectives of this article are to determine how the spatial management system is carried out at the local and regional level in Poland in relation to the environmental protection as well as to assess the current state of aff airs in this area and also to propose some changes. Particular attention was paid to the direct instrument of spatial management, which is the local development plan.
