The giant puffball Langermannia gigantea (Batsch: Pers.) Rostk. is a nitrophilous species, strictly protected in Poland. At present, it is a fairly common fungus, known from over a hundred sites all over Poland. It occurs i.a. in meadows, pastures, lawns and parks, as well as in forest communities, usually in anthropogenically changed places. A particularly large population of the giant puffball was found near the mouth of the Reda river, ca. 1.5 km west of the Rewa village. The population was located at southern and eastern parts of the fly ash landfill of the Wybrzeże Combined Heat and Power Plants (54°37′51″N, 18°28′10″E). The Langermannia gigantea population was found in the grassland community, growing on the reclaimed landfill banks. During the research carried out in 2011, a total number of 1149 fruiting bodies was found. They were distributed in different size aggregations over an area of 6.5 ha. It is the largest population of this species described from Poland. The diameter of 384 measured individuals varied from 6 to 36 cm, while the mean value was 17.8 cm.
