Ebb-and-flow irrigation systems create good possibilities of work mechanization and are already used in ornamental plant production in many countries. Nutrient solution is pumped on the bench, floor or trough and raises to the top of root medium by capillary soaking. Solution not used returns to a storage tank where it is held until the next watering. Fertilizers are applied at each watering. The advantages of this system include: reduced labour inputs, water and fertilizer consumption, uniformity and high quality of plants, elimination of fertilizer effluent to the environment. The problems concerning fertilization, watering frequency, plant disease control and oxygen stress are discussed.
