The effect of CaCl₂ in a water-oil emulsion given per os on the serum level of Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, Cl and acid-base status was assessed in 6 young bulls during hypocalcaemia induced by infusion of Na₂EDTA intravenously. The animals receiving a solution of CaCl₂ showed an increased amount of Ca release into sera, a slower decrease of Ca in the sera during Na₂EDTA infusion, and then its faster increase compared with control animals. Calcium chloride induced a mild metabolic acidosis, an increased level of Na and Cl and prevented a decrease of the kalium content, nor did it significantly influence the concentration of inorganic P and Mg in the sera. The studies will be continued in dry non-pregnant cows.
