The aim of the study was to determine a dependance between embryo roots fluorescence in UV light and the following morphological traits of Lolium perenne L.: the length of spike, number of spikelets in spike, number of florets in spikelet, length of the last internode, length and width of flag-leaf, tussock diameter, height of generative shoots and number of generative shoots. The research was conducted in the years 1993-1995 on the collection of three pasture cultivars: Anna, Argona and Arka. It has been found out, that considerable variation of many morphological traits, which is characteristic for Polish cultivars of Lolium perenne is independent on embryo root fluorescence of some plants. The plants with fluorescent embryo roots frequently developed inflorescences of non-typical shape. However, there is no reason to believe, that the fluorescence of embryo roots can indirectly determine production of Lolium perenne seed. Fluorescence ability can be applied as an auxilliary trait for specific differentiation of Lolium perenne from Lolium multiflorum.
