A presentation has been made of the current knowledge on the most important hormonal factors regulating the metabolic processes in the mammary gland and their effect opon lactation. It was found that there was a direct relationship between the development of mammary gland during maturation and GH concentration and dietary levels of heifers. Initiation and sustaining of lactation were connected with the secretion of steride sex hormones, prolactin (PRL), thyroid hormone, growth hormone (GH) as well as the effect of insulin and corticoids, which together form a lactogenic hormonal complex. A characteristic has also been given of the relationships between patterns transformation (digestion) in rumen and the course of lactation.
