Beet necrotic yellow vein virus - the agent causing rhizomania was for first time detected in Poland in 1987. In 1987-1988 the samples from 204 sugar beet fields with the plants showing the symptoms of rhizomania, were tested with ELISA test and in 64 of them the presence of virus was observed. In 1989-1990 occurrence of virus was recorded only sporadically. In next years (1992-1995) the studies carried out in area of high virus occurrence did not confirm the thesis about spreading of the disease. Positive results of ELSA test were confimed with ISEM and Western blotting.
