Sample digestion is a very important stage of trace element determination in biological material. Separate digestion procedures constituted a serious difficulty in the determinations of mercury, arsenic and selenium. Therefore, feasibility of microwave digestion of liver, blood and hair samples for simultaneous determination of those elements by atomic absorption spectroscopy methods was examined. The results were compared with those obtained by using conventional digestion procedures. The study showed that microwave digestion could be used for routine determination of mercury, arsenic and selenium after additional reheat with hydrochloric acid on hot plate. The statistical evaluation of the results obtained by various digestion methods revealed significant compatibility of the microwave and the conventional digestion procedures.
