Modern pig nutrition requires a knowledge of the physiological processes responsible for utilization of the supplied energy and dietary ingredients from the different conventionally available and technologically transformed feeds. In order to obtain the highest quality of meat adjusted to consumer demand the type of feeding system should be adopted according to different nutritional requirements, dependent on such factors and conditions like: postnatal development, growth, breed and environmental temperature in which the pigs are housed. Some physiological and technological aspects of sow feeding during gestation, late gestation and lactation, as well as feeding of the new-born pigs from birth to weaning are discussed. Giving pigs the optimal supply of energy and nutrients in their daily diet in of vital importance in the strategy of obtaining the highest quality and quantity of meat.
