W metabolizm ksenobiotyków zaangażowane są enzymy z rodziny cytochromu P450 – transbłonowe białka zlokalizowane w retikulum endoplazmatycznym i mitochondriach wielu tkanek organizmu. Wykazują one zmienność międzygatunkową polegającą na różnym poziomie ich aktywności i regulacji u poszczególnych gatunków. Konserwatywność i podobieństwo sekwencyjne niektórych z nich pozwala na ustalenie u zwierząt sekwencji analogicznych do ludzkich i prowadzenie badań z udziałem organizmów modelowych.

Cytochrome P450 enzymes belongs to a large family of hemoproteins and are mainly involved in the biotransformation of xenobiotics. Transmembrane protein are localized in the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria of many tissues. They indicate a variety of interspecies that depend on differences exist in the expression and catalytic activities. Conservatism and similarity of sequence allow to establish the analogical human sequences in animals and, in consequence, to carry out the studies on animal models. Many drugs may cause an increase or decrease the activity of various CY P isozymes. This is a major source of adverse drug interactions that are a result of inhibition or induction of cytochrome P450 enzymes. The investigatin of the ability to induce the interactions with synthetic drugs is very important for the safe evaluation of herbal pharmacotherapy. There is a need to perform preclinical and clinical research in order to explain mechanisms and basis for interactions between herbal and synthetic drugs. In this aim, it is necessary to investigate effect of medicinal plants on expression level of genes involved in xenobiotics biotransformation.
