The aim of the study was estimated the influence some slimming therapies on pituitary-gonadal axis activity in overweight women. The study was undertaken on 70 women (age 24-55 years) with overweight (BMI 26-30) applying during 8 weeks the following therapies: low calories diet (LcD) + chitosan (group 1), LcD + guarana (group 2), LcD + carnitine (group 3), LcD + placebo (group 4) and only low calorics diet (group 5). The interview at all women defined the phase of estrus cycle or period of post menopause. Usage diet was controlled by 24. hour long method. The activity of pituitary-gonadal axis was defined on plasma FSH and 17 ß-estradiol concentration before the beginning of therapy as well as after 4 and 8 weeks of it duration. Hormones concentrations were measured by radioimmunology methods, the percent of body fat by bioimpedance. BMI and body fat content in all groups significantly depended on duration therapy (p<0,0001), meanwhile the dynamics of changes was similar in all groups except group 4. The same pattern of BMI and fat content changes was affirmed in all therapeutic groups in both: the follicular and luteal phase of cycle, however significantly larger changes were observed in women after menopause (respectively p<0,01 and p<0,001). The FSH and 17 ß-estradiol concentration in all therapeutic groups statistically significant changed only in two stages of estrus cycle: FSH concentration in follicular phase had some different dynamics than in luteal (p<0,05) and average FSH plasma level was considerably higher in women after menopause (p<0,0005). 17 ß-estradiol concentration was also significantly different in reproductive period and post menopause (p<0,0006), the small differences of concentration appeared also between women in follicular and luteal phase of cycle (p<0,004). It seems, that the activity of pituitary-gonadal axis in women depended first of all from phase of estrus cycle and the occurrence of postmenopause period and the applied slimming therapies had only small influence on it.
