The authors present a brief outline of the history of Polish odonatological activities and the operations of the Odonatological Section of the Polish Entomological Society (PES). For the most part of the PES existence the number of people involved in dragonflies study was too low to establish a section. A rapid development of Polish odonatology in the 1930s, which could have ended in this way, was interrupted by WWII. When the odonatological movement revived in the 1970s and 80s, the integration of the profession around the “Świtezianka” bulletin was stopped by the decisions of contemporary authorities of the Polish Academy of Sciences. At the beginning of the 1990s a higher number of specialists appeared in high colleges. After a period of bilateral contacts and an informal meeting in 1994, the first National Odonatological Symposium (Bromierzyk, 17–19 IV 1998) was held, during which the Odonatological Section of PES was called into being and its first leader was dr. Stefan MIELEWCZYK. In 1998–2003, within the framework of the section, cooperation within the groups of authors started, which ended in projects such as the Red List of threatened animals in Poland or the Polish Red Data Book of Animals. Moreover, a general study on the protection of and threats to dragonflies was published (BERNARD at al. 2002). The works on an atlas of dragonfly distribution in Poland were commenced. Since 2004 the works of the section have intensified. Three symposia were organized: a scientific one and a training one. The semi-annual bulletin “Odonatrix” (ISSN 1733-8239) has been published since 2005. For the first time in over 100 years a Polish key to the identification of adult dragonflies has been published. Keys for larvae and exuviae are being prepared. A web page devoted to dragonflies was established and is systematically extended (www.odonata.pl). In the centre of the section's activities lies the project of a distribution atlas. Field works have been completed recently, the processing of materials is in progress in the form of a collective data base encompassing published and unpublished information about dragonflies of Poland. The completion of the project and publishing the work titled “The Atlas of Dragonflies (Odonata) Distribution in Poland” are planned for 2009. The section's latest initiative is “The data base of Polish odonatological literature”. It is to encompass all the publications devoted to dragonflies of Poland or written by Polish odonatologists. The papers are scanned and archivised ad PDF files, which are available for people interested in the area. Nowadays the data base consists of 115 papers – from current publications to the 19th century papers.
